Welcome to Crossroads!
We are Pittsburghs answer to providing at-risk youth with a the support they need to become active, intelligent, contributing members of society by helping them achieve remarkable success during their high school years.
Crossroads holistic approach strives to positively impact all levels of a teenagers daily lives: self, family, school, and community. Our three full-time counselors serve as trusted confidantes and are available to our teens and their parents around the clock, throughout the year. Counselors personally connect with Crossroads students on a daily basis and work closely with parents, teachers, and other service providers to track student progress.
Crossroads approach sets us apart from other educational enrichment programs because we understand and treat the root causes of academic underachievement and non-matriculation from high school. In contrast, current attempts to improve outcomes in public education rely almost exclusively on in-school interventions designed to improve standardized test scores or performance in specific content areas. Very little attention is paid to out-of-school factors that negatively impact students ability to learn and achieve (poverty, family stress, peer pressure, low-self-esteem, race and class prejudice, alienation, urban violence, etc.).
By contrast, Crossroads experience indicates that academic achievement is possible only after a childs basic physical, psychological, social, and emotional needs have been met. Our counselors understand that when a child is experiencing profound distress outside of school, that child is unlikely to succeed in school. Therefore, Crossroads strives to positively impact all the nested systems of a childs daily life: self, family, school, and community. Our extraordinary success speaks to the efficacy of this holistic approach, an approach that has resulted in consistently high educational outcomes and graduation rates for at-risk adolescents.
